Lauryn Hill reportedly paid more than $970,000 she owed to the federal government the night before her scheduled sentencing, but it didn’t stop a judge in Newark, New Jersey for sentencing her to three months in federal prison.
Reports have just surfaced that Lauryn Hill will not only serve three months behind bars for failing to pay tax returns on more than $1.8 million from 2005 to 2007, but the singer will also spend three months on house arrest after her time in prison.
Hill was present during her Monday afternoon sentencing, and reportedly compared her situation to a slave.
“I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of. … I’m a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me … I sold 50 million units … now I’m up here paying a tax debt. If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is,” she told the judge TMZ reports.
Hill is expected to report to prison by July 8th, and it’s unsure where the 37-year-old will spend her time.
