DaniLeigh Apologizes Following ‘Yellow Bone’ Backlash

DaniLeigh is apologizing after sparking outrage with her new song “Yellow Bone Is Want He Want.”

On Sunday (January 24) the multi-racial singer posted a video message on her Instagram page letting fans know she’s not a colorist and didn’t mean to offend anyone with her song.

“Hey guys, it’s DaniLeigh. I just wanted to address what’s going on with me right now,” she said in the now deleted post. “I think it’s super important, because I definitely feel super misunderstood,” she said. My song ‘Yellow bone is what he want,’ I think people twisted it into thinking, like, I’m trying to bash another woman, another skin tone, that was never my intention. I wasn’t brought up like that, I never looked at my skin as a privilege. I never looked at me as ‘I’m better than somebody because of my skin tone.”

In case you missed it, over the weekend the singer, who identifies as Afro-Latina, posted a snippet from the single which is meant to be an anthem for light skin women. Soon after all hell broke loose.

People thought it was in poor taste given that her man rapper DaBaby, a dark-skinned man, has children and baby momma’s with mahogany skin tones. They also thought she may have been taking shots at his BM Meme specifically.

In her apology, she made sure to note that she is dating a man with dark skin and has friends of all skin tones.

“I’m sorry that I wasn’t sensitive to the topic when I wrote my comment ‘why are you guys taking so personal?’ Because, it can be a personal thing to certain people, because colorist is a real thing so I do get it. But I’m not that. I’m not a colorist. I’m not a racist. I date a whole chocolate man. I have beautiful dark-skinned friends.”

This response was a complete 180 from her initial reaction. Following backlash, the 26-year-old responded to the “haters” with a series of posts on Twitter, which seemed to make matters worse.

Then she reposted an episode of “The Breakfast Club” where Charlamagne Da God and DJ Envy seem to be agreeing with her explanation of what the song means.

“We have songs about melanin,there’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’,” said Charlamagne referring to the track by Beyonce. “I think everybody should have pride in their complexion. How we got tell people to love the skin they’re in but when they make a song about their complexion people get upset.”
