Ahmaud Arbery: A Modern Day Lynching And The Public Outcry For Justice
He was just jogging. A simple act turned violent when Ahmaud Arbery was brutally gunned down while on his afternoon run. That was almost three months ago on February 23rd. The two white men responsible for his cold-blooded murder have gone unpunished — no charges have been filed and no arrest have been made. And not until the video leaked did the unlawful killing finally get the nationwide attention it deserves…
The shocking video is disturbing to say the least. In it, you see 25-year-old Arbery jogging the streets of his quiet neighborhood in the small suburban town of Brunswick, Georgia. You also see father-son duo, Gregory and Travis McMichael, stopped in the middle of the road in their pick-up truck — Travis with a shot-gun in hand. Arbery is pursued, accosted, attacked, and shot to death in broad daylight.
I am trembling with anger over what I just witnessed. CLICK AWAY if you need to.
We need ALL HANDS ON DECK.
This is the lynching of Ahmaud Arbery.
It’s one of the worst things I’ve seen in my entire life.🆘Meet us now @ https://t.co/AIYI5FD2sn to demand justice. pic.twitter.com/7cqn3q737M

Again, this occurred in February. And only after the public outcry did the District Attorney state he would finally take the evidence to the grand jury. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the grand jury is not set to convene until June 12th. In the meantime, Ahmaud’s murderers are free…
This is District Attorney, Tom Durden, who suggested taking the murder of an innocent black man to a grand jury! Oh btw this the same DA who had the video already for a MONTH and who was arrested for a DUI 2 years ago, let’s make sure he does his JOB!!! #JusticeForAhmaudArbery pic.twitter.com/UuXdlzfqEP

What this headline doesn't state is that Georgia will not be convening grand juries until June 12.
So tattoo parlors, bowling alleys & barbershops are open under Kemp's rules. But the suspected murderers of a Black man are free until further notice. https://t.co/jOAm6PPUj6

The outrage has been swift and furious — and rightful so. People are demanding justice NOW … not months from now.
Why is everything open in Georgia but Grand Juries? You can literally get a tattoo but not get justice.

Let’s be clear: the Georgia prosecutor in the #AhmaudArbery case is no hero. He has sat on this video for a month. He is ONLY sending this to a grand jury because the video was leaked. #RolandMartinUnfiltered

The video is clear: Ahmaud Arbery was killed in cold blood. My heart goes out to his family, who deserve justice and deserve it now. It is time for a swift, full, and transparent investigation into his murder. https://t.co/alvY5WjdHx

The video of #AhmaudArbery sickens me to my core.
Exercising while Black shouldn't be a death sentence.https://t.co/GV7GFju7tr

As more attention focuses on the troubling killing of #AhmaudArbery, our systems of law enforcement and justice must be held to the highest standards: full investigation, appropriate charges and an unbiased prosecution. https://t.co/5mYI4vA8A6

#AhmaudArbery should still be alive right now. This is tragic and unacceptable. It should ignite us all in demands for justice.
I'm calling on the Department of Justice to investigate. We need justice for Ahmaud and his family. https://t.co/l4Pih9xbmR

The lack of immediate response to the modern day lynching of #AhmaudArbery is an injustice for all Black people.
