Serena Williams Trends On Twitter Following Maria Sharapova Retirement Announcement

Twitter is petty AF … but what else is new. On Wednesday, tennis star Maria Sharapova announced her retirement from the sport but instead of receiving celebratory tweets she received a good ol’ dragging. Yep you read that right.

Apparently folks thought it was a good idea to remind the world of all of Sharapova’s shortcomings and glorify the woman who beat her several times … Serena Williams.

Sharapova Says Goodbye

Sharapova, 32, who had been slowed down by injuries and was suspended for using performance enhancing drugs, made her announcement in an essay published Wednesday in Vanity Fair and Vogue.

“How do you leave behind the only life you’ve ever known?” she wrote. “How do you walk away from the courts you’ve trained on since you were a little girl, the game that you love—one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys—a sport where you found a family, along with fans who rallied behind you for more than 28 years? I’m new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis—I’m saying goodbye.”
