Lupita Nyong’o Details Intense Physical Transformation For ‘Quiet Place’
HipHollywood chatted with Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn ahead of the release of A Quiet Place: Day One about their love for scary movies, Lupita’s intense physical transformation, and where they go for peace and quiet.
HH: I’m a scary cat ( pun intended). Curious if either of you like scary movies, films like these where monsters are popping out, and you’re on the edge of your seat?
JQ: I do really enjoy watching horror films with people. I’m not one of those people that want to watch it at 3:00 PM on a Wednesday afternoon by myself at home. It’s a bit bleak, but it’s very fun getting together and watching it and watching everyone get scared.
LN: I love to scare people. Do you? I love to scare people. My family will tell you I have been scaring them my whole life. And so finally, my mom is like, Thank goodness, now you have a job where you can go do that. Because, yeah, they don’t like that about me.
HH: Makes sense this film is set in New York ( the loudest city in the world). How was it filming in the city and also exploring the city again?
LN: Well, we hate to break it to you. We didn’t shoot it here. We shot it in the UK. We did have a few days in New York, but the main part was shot in the UK. And the film, I think credit goes to the art director who did an incredible job of creating New York, Times Square, in the UK.
HH: You went through an intense transformation for this role, how long did it take and what did you eat when you all finally wrapped?
LN: So it took a minute. It took a minute to get ready for this movie. And I had a goal, and I was dogged about it. And when I wrapped the film, my treat to myself was French fries and a burger …not pizza.
HH: Where is your quiet place, where you like to retreat to, when you’re not working?
JQ: My balcony in South London is becoming my tranquil, safe space. I’ve got a little garden going, a little herb garden going. While I like to jump in my ice bath there. That’s where it all gets pretty… Well, I make quite a lot of noise in there, but it quietens the mind
LN: For me, my quiet place after a day of being cattywompus is my home in Topanga. I moved to LA recently after living here for 12 years, and I live in farmland, and so I have the smell of manure, which I love, actually. A cup of tea, some music, and a beautiful view. That’s my quiet place. With my cat.
