Blackout Tuesday Is NOT About Silence…
You’ve probably seen the black boxes flooding your Instagram timeline with #BlackOutTuesday as the caption. But, what does this blackout really mean and how does it help fight against systemic racism and police brutality?
There’s some confusion about what this “blackout” really does. While it may seem like it’s silencing the voices that have been loudly protesting against white supremacy, it’s actually aiming to amplify them. The blackout is a call to pause those things that aren’t important right now and use this time to strengthen the fight against police brutality while calling for justice for George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others. It was initially penned #TheShowMustBePaused, an initiative created by Atlantic Records executive Jamila Thomas and Platoon’s Brianna Agyemang.
