Floyd Mayweather’s Uncle And Trainer Dies Following Death Of Ex-Girlfriend
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for boxing champ Floyd Mayweather and not because of the coronavirus. Just a few days after it was revealed that Josie Harris, the mother of his three oldest children, was found dead inside her car, Mayweather’s uncle and former boxing coach Roger Mayweather has died. Floyd’s camp confirmed the news of his passing. He was 58.
Roger was a key member of Floyd’s training team, and sculpted him into the global phenom he is today. Many considered Roger the best trainer in the world.
He was also a boxer and fought against the likes of Julio César Chávez and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini in his heyday. He was also a 2-weight world champion — holding the WBA and lineal super featherweight titles back in the day, along with the WBC light welterweight title (from ’87 to ’89).
Many also remember Roger for his classic one-liners and fight tips he’d give Floyd inside the ring.
Roger had been in declining health for years. Floyd spoke about his uncle to reporters when his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. took over because Roger’s diabetes had started giving him vision problems.
Floyd has not released a statement yet regarding his uncle’s passing, though they were extremely close. In recent days he has shared a lot of personal photos of he and Josie on his Instagram feed.
An investigation is still underway regarding the 40-year-old’s mysterious death. According to TMZ she was found unresponsive inside her car on March 10. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have said they do not suspect foul play, and their was no suicide note or drugs found.
