Omar Epps remembers the exact day Tupac Shakur wrote his debut single “Brenda’s Got a Baby.”
It was while on the set of their 1992 film Juice that Pac was inspired to write the song which appeared on his debut album 2Pacalypse Now.
“He was reading the newspapers … a woman had thrown her baby in the trash which was kind of common in New York,” he told HipHollywood exclusively during a recent chat about his new film, Traffik.
Omar went on to say that Pac was “so rattled by it, the whole day, kept bringing it up.” According to the actor, that same day during their lunch break, Shakur invited Epps into is trailer. “He starts rapping this song to me,” Omar said.
He added, “Two, three months later his album comes out and I see the video. That was incredible, that’s real life art.”
On the track, which features Dave Hollister, the late artist raps about a 12-year-old girl who lives in an impoverished neighborhood and doesn’t have the means to support a baby.
