Beyonce served some serious realness on Saturday night when she headlined the 2018 Coachella Valley Music Festival. Drawing thousands to the main stage, the singer’s epic movies, on stage presence, homage to HBCUs and cameos made for the best Coachella performance to date.
Here are five things you should know about the singer’s big weekend.
HBCU: During the star’s stellar set, she paid homage to HBCU’s by incorporating over 150 musicians and dancers – including a full marching band and choir. According to reports, there were over 200 people on stage at one point.
The marching band members hailed from schools such as Florida A&M, Prairie View A&M University, North Carolina A&T, Tennessee State University and Alabama State University. The group was reportedly directed by the legendary Don P. Roberts, who also consulted on the 2002 film, Drumline.
Following weekend one of the music festival, the singer went on to announce that she will be donating $100k in scholarship money to four HBCUs. The singer will give four $25,000 grants to Wilberforce, Tuskegee, Bethune-Cookman, and Xavier Universities.
Made History: Beyonce made history on Saturday night after becoming the first Black female performer to headline Coachella. During her set, the mother of three told the crowd: “Coachella, thank you for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline.” But it didn’t end there.
She also made history as the first girl group to perform at Coachella all thanks to her reuniting with Destiny’s Child; the singer set the highest live streaming record ever; she was the most tweeted about; and she just so happened to have delivered the longest onstage dancing sequence at the annual event.
Destiny’s Child: The rumors were true, Beyonce and Destiny’s Child reunited during her set on Saturday night. About 90 minutes into her performance, the singer brought out Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for a few fan faves; including “Lose My Breath,” “Say My Name” and “Soldier.”
Jay Z: Beyonce’ knows how to put on a good show when she’s alone, but when her husband Jay Z joins the fun, there’s just no comparison. Ahead of the couple’s upcoming our, Jay arrived on stage to help deliver an epic performance of “Deja Vu.”
Solange: And it’s always a party when Beyonce and sister Solange get together. Towards the end of Bey’s set, her little sis came out on stage for one hell of a dance battle. This was extra special because Beyonce usually makes an appearance during Solange’s Coechella sets.
