Friends of Bill Paxton are continuing to express their sadness about the actor’s sudden passing. HipHollywood caught up with Samuel L. Jackson at the 2017 Oscars, one day after news broke that Paxton had died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. At the time, his cause of death had not been revealed.

“It’s sad,” said Jackson. “I wish we knew more about how and why, but you know Bill was a wonderful person. I worked with him a few times. He was always a compassionate and wonderful guy to be with, always professional, and it’s sad.”

According to the actor’s death certificate obtained by People, Paxton suffered a fatal stroke following heart surgery. Paxton underwent surgery to replace a heart valve and correct an aortic aneurysm when complications arose. Paxton had surgery on Feb. 14 and died 11 days later on the 25th after suffering a stroke. He was 61.
