Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali just nabbed his very first Academy Award.
On Sunday night, the actor received the coveted golden statue for his role as Juan in the Barry Jenkins-directed drama. “I want to thank my teachers, my professors … one thing that they consistently told me was it wasn’t about you, it’s no about you,” he said while accepting the award. “It’s about these characters. This is such a wonderful experience.”
The 43-year-old, who was moved to tears while addressing the room of entertainers, went on to thank his wife, who gave birth to their baby girl four days ago. “I just want to thank her for being such a soldier though this process and carrying me through it all,” he said.
Moonlight was nominated for eight awards, including Motion Picture, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Original Score and Writing.
