Black Girl Magic is taking over the box office! According to reports, Hidden Figures has surpassed best picture frontrunner La La Land to become the top-grossing best picture Oscar nominee of the year.
Over this past weekend, the film, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, brought its box office total to $119.4 million, while La La Land raked in $118.3 million.
This is the first time the film about a team of African-American women mathematicians/space heroes has topped the musical. According to Indie Wire, we can expect Hidden Figures to garner over $150 million or more from now until the Oscars.
The film has been nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture (up against La La Land), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) and Best Adapted Screenplay.
HipHollywood sat down with the cast back in December and got their take on why the film is so special.
