Gabby Douglas Breaks Down In Tears Over ‘Social Media Bullying’

Gabby Douglas has had enough of ya’ll dragging her on social media. Since the 2012 Olympic Gymnastics champion has been competing in the 2016 Rio games, it’s been one critique after another about her hair, lack of patriotism, being a poor sport, and more.

The 20-year-old literally broke down after talking to reporters on Sunday night after placing 7th in the uneven bars finals. When asked about all of the backlash she’s received during her time in Rio she said: “When they talk about my hair or me not putting my hand on my heart or me being very salty in the stands, they’re really criticizing me. It doesn’t really feel good. It was a little bit hurtful.”

When asked about her performance at this year’s games, and failing to place in the individual all-around finals as she did in 2012, she said: “In my head, I pictured it a little bit differently. You want to picture yourself being on top and doing amazing gymnastics.”

Last week, the two-time Olympian was called “unpatriotic” by some online critics after she didn’t place her hand over her heart when the “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played after Team USA won the all-around finals. And, if that wasn’t enough, she was also accused of being “a poor sport” and “looking salty” after placing third behind her teammates Aly Raisman and Simone Biles in the individual all around semi-finals.

“Everything I’ve gone through has been a lot this time around,” Douglas said, “and I apologize if [I seemed] really mad in the stands. I wasn’t. I was supporting Aly. And I always will support them and respect them in everything they do. I never want anyone to take it as I was jealous or I wanted attention. Never. I support them, and I’m sorry that I wasn’t showing it.”

“I’ve been through a lot,” she added. “I still love them. I still love the people who love me. Still love them who hate me. I’m just going to stand on that.”

Following the interview, Douglas could be seen sitting alone scrolling through her phone. A member of the team’s staff and a fellow gymnast both stopped to console her, and to offer a hug. Eventually, she was seen grabbing a tissue, dabbing her eyes and wiping her nose as she exited the gym.
