Oprah Winfrey is setting the record straight on rumors that she has a secret son. That gossip started after Lady O was confronted by a man outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York earlier this month. Oprah tells our friends over at Entertainment Tonight that she does have history with the man who ambushed her, but it’s not her biological son as tabloids have reported.
“I met Calvin around the early ’90s, I think it was 1992. I was doing a film for television called There Are No Children Here,” Oprah told ET, confirming that Calvin is not her birth son. “We were shooting in the projects in Chicago and I was sitting on set during a break, and this cute little sparkly-eyed boy came underneath the yellow tape to hand me a soda. I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life, and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn’t have a job and they were stuck in the projects.”
Oprah went on to explain that she took Calvin and his family under her wings, helping move them out of the projects and get Calvin into private school. After the young man was expelled, Oprah found another school out of state that she thought would be a good fit for him. “I found a school in Mississippi that was a private boarding school because I thought if I could remove him from the environment that he’d been accustomed to growing up in, that maybe that would be helpful to him.”
When Calvin said he didn’t want to stay at the school, Oprah says she walked away from his life. “I said, ‘Calvin, this is the moment. This is a seminal moment for you. I know you are 16 and can’t see the road ahead, but if you leave this school and refuse to get an education — I have tried to offer you an education twice — there isn’t another school I can put you in. If you leave this school, I am done. There is nothing else I can do.’ … And that was my last conversation with Calvin in the early ’90s.”
Oprah says she was setup outside of Ed Sullivan Theater when the young man confronted her for a photo opportunity and story which he eventually sold the tabloids. “When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him,” she finished, noting that she’s not hurt, but is “disappointed.”
No Joke: Bill Cosby Is Back On Stage Doing Stand-Up
We are not trying to shame the elderly, but we are super confused why Bill Cosby is back on stage doing stand-up. He is after all 80-years old and going blind, but apparently that’s all apart of his routine.
Cosby did a set on Monday at LaRose Jazz Club in Philly and poked fun at his visual impairment amongst other personal anecdotes. He didn’t touch his pending trial, but many suspect his resurgence into the public eye is all a ploy to revitalize his image.
Just two weeks ago Cosby attended a dinner with friends and let reporters tag along to ask questions and take photos. This time around Cosby announced on his Facebook that he’d be doing a set a couple hours before. He wore a sweatshirt that said “hello friend” and also played the drums alongside the Tony Williams Jazz Quartet.
Folks in the audience are laughing … so maybe it’s working.
The disgraced comedian’s retrial on sexual assault charges is set to begin in April, and a new jury selection begins at the end of March. He averted a decision this past June when a jury couldn’t agree on a verdict … ending in a mistrial.
