Jamie Foxx made headlines earlier this week after a seemingly botched National Anthem during Saturday night’s Mayweather versus Pacquiao fight.

Following the performance, social media users criticized the singer for his off key, gospel rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. But according to Foxx, there was a reason for his imperfect vocals.

The singer explained on The Ellen Show that it all came down to his earpiece. “Some people were a little upset with how it went down,” he said, before mimicking how Black people usually sing the National Anthem. “What did happen in the ring, my ears came out. My inner ears.”

He continued,”My inner ears were out and I’m singing with an organ so I can’t hear what the organ is doing with the big crowd. So some of it was a little off. In the arena, it killed. The telecast was a little off.”

Foxx concluded, “But we still love America.”

Yes we do Jamie. And we still love you.
