Director Ava DuVernay is rallying behind Zendaya Coleman after the young actress slammed E! News’ Giuliana Rancic for making negative comments about her locs.
“You’re beautiful, Queen. We bless the ignorant and wish them well. Onward. xo,” Ava tweeted in response to Zendaya’s lengthy Instagram message shaming Rancic for suggesting that the Disney star looked like she smelled of patchouli oil or weed during Sunday night’s Oscars.
In the IG post, Zendaya referred to DuVernay and Grammy nominated star, Ledisi who both wear locs and stated that her Oscars hairstyle was in efforts to make a statement.
“To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive,” Coleman wrote.
“My [me] wearing my hair locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”
Fashion guru, Claire Sulmers, who was recently acknowledged as one of Ebony’s Power 100, also reacted to the Disney star’s post, writing on Instagram:
“I wear locs. I don’t smoke or smell of weed. Thanks @zendaya for confronting stereotypes and ignorance head on.”
