Raven-Symoné has shocked the world again by her recent comments. On the heels of the whole “I’m not African-American” debacle, the That’s So Raven star is now saying she used to tan several times a week to achieve darker skin.
“When I had my own show, I used to tan three or four times a week in a tanning bed to get darker,” Raven revealed. “I did.”
The surprising statement was made during the filming of the new documentary Light Girls (the sequel to the Bill Duke directed Dark Girls which premiered on OWN in 2013). The film attempts to shed light on the experiences of light-skinned Black women and how they deal with colorism … especially in Hollywood. During her interview, Symone went on to share that her frequent tanning became an issue on set and she was asked to stop.
“It’s funny, one of the lighting guys came up—I love him to death; I love him, oh my goodness—he goes, ‘Raven, I need you to stop tanning. You’re getting too dark, and we have to re-light the whole entire show,'” Raven recalls. “I was like, ‘Sorry. I was just trying to be pretty.'”
