Zendaya Drops Out Of Aaliyah Biopic

Published

on

What a difference a week makes. Lifetime has confirmed that Zendaya will no longer be starring in the cable channel’s upcoming Aaliyah biopic.

“We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold,” the network’s PR team announced on Sunday via its Twitter feed.

A rep for Zendaya also confirmed that their client is not involved in the project but no reason was given.

The casting of the Disney star was heavily criticized by Aaliyah fans online who claimed the actress wasn’t “Black enough.” Zendaya responded to the detractors in an exclusive sit-down interview at our HipHollywood office, saying she earned the right to play the deceased singer through handwork and practice.

No word on who will play Aaliyah. Rihanna is one name being floated online, but Lifetime executives have told us that is not the case.
