Serena Williams Almost Died During Child Birth – 3 Shocking Details Behind Tennis Pro’s Complications

Serena Williams gave birth to a healthy baby girl on September 1, 2017 and is now a happy mother to a perfect bundle of joy. But what fans didn’t know was that the tennis superstar almost died during child birth.

In an op-ed piece for CNN, the mother of one opened up about complications she had while delivering her first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. Here are three shocking details the athlete is now unveiling.

1. According to Williams, she had an emergency C-section after the baby’s heart rate dropped dramatically during contractions. “It began with a pulmonary embolism, which is a condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs becomes blocked by a blood clot,” Williams wrote. “This sparked a slew of health complications that I am lucky to have survived.”

2. “My C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing I endured as a result of the embolism. I returned to surgery, where the doctors found a large hematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in my abdomen. And then I returned to the operating room for a procedure that prevents clots from traveling to my lungs.”

3. When Serena “finally made it home to my family, I had to spend the first six weeks of motherhood in bed.”

In the article posted on CNN’s website, Williams opened up about studies that prove “Black women in the United States are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes.”
