Jay Z and Mariah Carey have taken over their respective genres in the music industry and they now have their eyes set on the beverage industry.
According to Forbes, Jay and Mariah have teamed up with Go N’Syde, a company headed by former Def Jam executive Kevin Liles, to produce their own beverages. The drinks can be found in Duane Reade and Walgreens stores across the United States and are branded to fit the artists image.
Carey’s drink is described as a “pink concoction” named “Butterfly” after her 1997 hit album and is set to target “young to middle-aged women.” Jay’s dink is called 40/40 after his club chain, ’40/40′ and is supposed to have and “Arnold Palmer-esque” flavor.
The drinks retail at $1.99 a bottle and include an additional augmented reality feature on the packaging that allows people to watch content associated with either Jay or Mariah by pointing their smartphones at the bottle. “I never dreamed that I could have an interactive experience with my fans while drinking my own beverage,” Carey said in a statement. “The whole concept is innovative and refreshing and the drink is beyond.”
The drinks are off to a good start, Forbes says that since their launch at the beginning of May, they have sold about 1,000 bottles a week.
