Why Solange Knowles Feels “Far Older Than 27”
Solange Knowles was more than candid in the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar when discussing her life as a single mother. The singer, who divorced her high school sweetheart and son’s father at the age of 20, even opened up about her relationship with her ex, Daniel Smith.
“We co-parent really well,” she told the magazine. “I’m able to say, ‘I need to finish this album, can you step up and take care of the boy?” … Luckily, I dated all of the losers ages ago. My love life has been stable for a while,” she said about her boyfriend, video director Alan Ferguson. “It’s a f*cked-up thing … Without conflict it’s a lot harder to write interesting songs.”
That’s when Beyonce’s little sis explained that she has learned a lot during her twenties. “Everyone talks about how, in your 30s, all of these growing pains transition into wisdom and you feel more self-assured and confident, but I think I had a bit of a jump-start on that at 27,” she said. “For the first time in my life, I’m basing every decision around the idea of whether I want to do it or if I think it will be inspiring. And that’s paid off for me.”
“In a lot of ways, emotionally and mentally, I feel far older than 27. Just going through a marriage and a divorce, which I essentially did by 21, will give you an insane amount of perspective on life,” the mom explained.
Knowles moved to New Orleans last summer from Brooklyn and according to the publication, enrolled her nine-year-old son, Julez, in a local school that fall. Solange is currently working on her new album and according to the singer, Louisiana is the best place to knock it out.
“I figure there’s no better way to buckle down and finish it than to be as far away from everyone as possible, cell phone and computer behind,” she told the magazine. “I’m not very good at writing songs when I have a lot of clutter in my mind.”
