For months, the verdict was out on whether or not Will Smith would reprise his role in Roland Emmerich’s forthcoming sequel to Independence Day, but now it sounds like Smith will not be returning.
A source reveals to Deadline.com that the actor informed the studio that he will not be joining the team. Although Smith was never officially involved with the sequel that is set to hit theaters Summer 2016, Emmerich always had high hopes that the that 45-year-old could possibly return.
“I sometimes say, ‘No, Will Smith will not be in it,’ because he didn’t want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned where we want to talk about it again. So, anything can happen,” Emmerich told Digital Spy last year.
There are reports that Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan could possibly star in the ID sequel and fill the shoes of Smith. Jordan is still being sought out and is reportedly at the top of the studio’s list.
