Nelly Addresses Whether Or Not Ashanti’s ‘Never Should Have’ Is About Their Split

It’s no secret that rapper Nelly and r&b singer Ashanti had a hot and heavy romance that led to a breakup just last year. But what fans have been dying to know is if Ashanti’s first single from her new album, Braveheart was about she and Nelly’s split.

During a recent sit-down interview with New York’s Breakfast Club, Nelly addressed the rumors, revealing that the ballad, titled “Never Should Have” is not about the former couple’s breakup.

“That song was done a year before. I have the original version of that. I picked that song,” the St. Louis rapper told the hosts. “Can’t be (about me). That song was done a year before it came out,” he added.

Nelly also made reference to his split with the singer, saying, “Relationships are tough. As a man, you guilty ’til you prove your innocence in them situations, you know what I’m sayin? It’s just like ‘yo, what [did] you do.”

Nelly and Ashanti reportedly broke up because Nelly wouldn’t put a ring on it.

It was Mrs. Hart’s first red carpet since giving birth to the couple’s first child, Kenzo Kash, just three weeks ago. To say it was a snapback is an understatement. The 30-year-old, who worked out during her entire pregnancy, look sexy and svelt in a elegant black number while her superstar hubby hit the carpet in a black suit with white trim.

Although the couple faced some bumps in the road earlier this year with Kev being extorted over a video showing him cheating on his wife, the couple has bounced back. And on Tuesday night’s jungle-themed red carpet Hart told HipHollywood, “My wife is just an amazing woman … I would not be me right now without that woman in my life.”

You can see Kev, alongside Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jack Black and more, when “Jumani: Welcome To The Jungle” hits theaters on December 20th.
