“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ‘I’m different.’ If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand,” Collins explains.
While Collins is currently a free agent, he says he wanted to be honest with people about his sexuality before signing with a new team. “I want to be genuine and authentic and truthful.”
Collins also discussed his NBA career, and any actions that may seem questionable now that he’s out. “I’m not afraid to take on any opponent. I love playing against the best. Though Shaquille O’Neal is a Hall of Famer, I never shirked from the challenge of trying to frustrate the heck out of him. (Note to Shaq: My flopping has nothing to do with being gay.)”
