HipHollywood got up close and personal with eclectic singer Janelle Monae for her first ever Essence cover.
Hot on the heels of her Grammy win for the song “We Are Young” with the band Fun, Monae dished to us about gracing the May cover and how she hopes it inspires young girls. ” I just hope to continue to make our generation proud,” she said. “By being on Essence I just pray other young girls are just inspired.”
For the shoot Monae ditched her signature uniform and rocked a series of a vintage and couture pieces from designers like Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.
“Essence knows I have a strong love for science fiction and the future,” said Monae. “So we wanted to pick pieces that represented what that felt like without over stating.”
Inside the issue, Monae also dished about her choice to not be overly sexy in her fashion and remain covered up saying, “I like skirts and dresses just like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way.”
Monae is gearing up to release her 2nd studio album The Electric Lady later this summer and will also hit the stage for the Essence Music Festival this July. In the meantime, the May issue of Essence hits newsstands April 5th.
